New York is a popular destination for visitors worldwide. It is known as the 'big apple' and the city that never sleeps!
New York is a city with many sights to see. It is a buzzing city and packs a lot of humanity onto one tiny island! It is populated with the poor and the obscenely rich, is home to many world class museums, restaurants and other attractions. It is a city of excess.
Hotel prices in New York are at their priciest from Mid September to Mid November as well as May and June as these are the most temperate times in the seasons and thus attract a lot of visitors. There is often a great deal of cold rain from December to February and in the summer the heat can be very humid and is felt keenly in a city so packed in!
The area that is now New York City was originally occupied by more than 11,000 native Americans. The area was founded by an English explorer by the name of Henry Hudson in 1609, who happened upon it when he was looking for the North West Passage.
The latter part of the 19th Century was when NYC experienced its major boom time into one of the leading cities in the world. It was a time when the population grew, primarily due to the influx of European migrants - many of whom were businessmen. Many of these men took advantage of the fact that there was a general lack of oversight in the stock and industry sectors and many of them set themselves up on lower 5th Avenue - often referred to as 'millionaires row'. The first skyscrapers were also constructed.
Recent times have bought disruption to the usual mayhem of NYC. On the 11th September 2001 the worst terrorist attack ever to take place on US land happened when two hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Centres. Thousands of people were killed but NYC quickly rallied itself and rebuilt its business district, and its grit and morale.
